This is the future of science. In the field of biology, the majority of undergraduate students are women, and only a small percentage of these women will ever be taught by a female professor. At San Francisco State University, however, things are changing. Of the 40 staff members in the Biology Department, 15 are women. Leticia (right) was the first Latina to be promoted to full-time professor, and Carmen (left) followed her this past year. Both women are award-winning, published research scientists, and they also have a passion for providing other women and people of color with role models, through both their own academic careers and their team.
