This is history. Cindy greets visitors at Valdres House, a typical Norwgian landowner's home, built in 1795 on a farm in Norway. Today, the house is a part of the Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum, which occupies most of a city block in downtown Decorah, Iowa. The museum is one of many across the U.S. representing dozens of immigrant populations. The museums speak not only to those who share the particular culture but also they allow all of us to find common threads in the story of coming to America. At Vesterheim, passing on aspects of Norwegian culture to the next generation is of primary importance.
